Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is an emerging technology in microbiology. Recent studies have shown its utility for bacterial typing and the identification of outbreaks. This new technology is able to provide highly reliable results in less time than other molecular methods such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). In our laboratory, we have evaluated FTIR spectroscopy mainly to characterize outbreaks retrospectively and in real-time, caused by gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Moreover, we are developing studies for classification purposes of different bacteria according to their Sequence Type (ST) or for differentiation of subspecies and closely related species.
